EFFECTIVE TODAY - Building Cooling Restrictions Stage 3 Implementation

Due to an Extreme Heat Warning issued by the National Weather Service for the Los Angeles region, the university will implement Stage 3 of the cooling curtailment plan beginning at 12 p.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 9.

To protect critical campus facilities during times of high heat and humidity, UCLA has established a three-stage cooling response plan for non-critical spaces.

Given the severity of this heat event, UCLA is moving directly to Stage 3 to extend the availability of chilled water for critical campus operations. All cooling to targeted building fan systems in impacted buildings serving non-critical areas has been turned off, but normal ventilation will continue in these spaces. In accordance with the California Code of Regulation for Indoor Heat Illness Prevention, community members in these impacted building spaces will be directed to either temporarily relocate or shift to remote work or learning (as authorized by and in accordance with Academic Senate Guidelines for Remote Instruction) as interior temperatures would be expected to reach or exceed 82 degrees.

These measures will remain in effect until further notice and are necessary to maintain adequate cooling in critical facility areas, including hospital and patient care settings, research space, vivariums, general assignment classrooms and data centers. We will send a BruinPost notifying the community when the curtailment stage has ended.

Preventing Heat Illness

With cooling reduced in these spaces, temperatures indoors may climb well above normal. UCLA Environment, Health & Safety maintains guidance on recognizing and responding to heat illness — including symptoms, first-response steps, and the trigger temperatures that require employers to act.
